Japanese Kaiju Films

On the internet there is a plethora of “lists” that talk about “all kaiju movies”. You relatively get one of two things, the first is an incomplete list of the actual Japanese productions that only cover Godzilla, Gamera, Toho, Daiei, SRS-released, and modern Ultraman titles. This list can be frustrating for people who are trying to learn more about the genre but cannot due to a lack of proper research.

The other list is what you see mostly, compiling any movie that features a giant monster (but not everything!) and putting it on the list and proclaiming it to be “complete”. Mostly filled with 1950’s B-movies, Asylum Entertainment, and blockbuster titles from America and the usual suspects for international additions (i.e. Yong(g)ary, Gorgo, Reptilicus, and, “Oh! did you know that north Korea made a kaiju movie called Pulgasari!”).

I wanted to do something different, so what you have below is a list of every Japanese-produced kaiju film that I have been able to come across, there are a few limitations to prevent this list from being incredibly long, and those restrictions are:

  1. Runtime of 50 minutes or longer to be counted as a movie

  2. Must be produced in Japan OR have multiple Japanese influences

    • This includes:

      • Production Companies

      • Director

      • Producers

      • Japanese origins

  3. Remakes do NOT count unless they have the top requirements (no Legendary’s Monsterverse or Power Rangers films)

  4. The kaiju must have a major inclusion in the film for it to be counted (no The Mysterians)

    • This includes:

      • Title inclusion

      • More than one scene

      • Must appear in the narrative more than once (this is why titles like Zebraman 1 & 2 and Yakuza Apocalypse don’t appear)

Written by: Hiroto Yokokawa, Yuki Yonezawa, Kazuma Yoneyama, and Robert Hood

    Synopsis:

The Great Buddha Arrival The Original is a Japanese full-length movie made and released in 1934 (Showa 9) by Edamasa Yoshiro. It is one of the earliest Japanese “Tokusatsu (special effects)” movies, which is exemplified by “Kaiju (monster)” movies. These films established and spread the image of Tokusatsu movies. In the film, the Shurakuen Buddha statue, located in Aichi, suddenly sprang to his feet and wandered around Nagoya city. The story became even stranger when Heaven and Hell appeared later in the film. Unfortunately the film was destroyed during World War ll. In 2018, more than 80 years after the debut of the original film, notable film makers/Tokusatsu fans came together to reboot the film for a whole new generation. They were eager to redefine the original film, which is widely regarded as the most important in the history of Tokusatsu, and to share its value with future audiences. A lot of themes from the original film's story are still relevant today; the idea of life and death, tension of war, and the story of the suicide incidents of 1933.
